Every address and every site records its place as codes from international standards, not as text. You choose from lists; the platform shows each name in your language and keeps the code.
- Country: the ISO 3166 country code, for example
BRfor Brazil orDEfor Germany. - State or province: the ISO 3166-2 code of the first level the country uses: a Brazilian state
(
BR-MG, Minas Gerais), a US state (US-NY), a German Land (DE-BY, Bayern), an Argentine province (AR-B, Buenos Aires), a French region, a Spanish autonomous community. Countries that ISO does not divide (Gibraltar, Åland…) have no state field. - City: chosen from a list of cities and municipalities. A city that has a UN/LOCODE (the
United Nations code for trade locations, for example
BRBHZfor Belo Horizonte orUSNYCfor New York) carries it, and with it its position on maps.
Because they are codes, a buyer in Germany sees Minas Gerais while your team in Brazil sees the same place, reports and product passports (UNTP) carry the same codes in every country, and dashboards can group your sites by state.
Choose a place
In Settings ▸ Company, in the company setup and on every site:
- Choose the Country: type a few letters of its name in any language.
- Choose the State or province: the list holds only the states of that country. Type part of the
name or its code (
MG). - Type at least two letters of the City and choose it. The list shows its state and its UN/LOCODE; cities with an airport, a port or a railway come first. Choosing a city sets its state for you.
A small place that is not in the list (a district, a farm's locality) can be kept as you typed it. It is saved without a UN/LOCODE or map position, and the field says so.
"Choose the state again"
Places written before these lists existed were converted to codes where the text named exactly one state, for example Minas Gerais or MG. When it did not, nothing was guessed: the place shows a yellow note such as It was written as "Sul de Minas", which is not a state of Brazil. Open the company address or the site, choose the state from the list and save: the note goes away.
Where the lists come from
Countries, states and cities come from the Countries States Cities Database (countrystatecity.in, Open Database License), with ISO 3166-2 checked against the ISO list, and city codes from UN/LOCODE (UNECE). A copy is kept inside the platform, so pages never wait on an outside service, and it is refreshed a few times a year.
